Storm Chase

South-Central Oklahoma

Editor:  Putnam Reiter

The Chase -

Team 1 - Rob Ferguson and Putnam Reiter
Miles Driven - @200
Departure Time - 15:00 CDT
Return Time - 19:00 CDT

After the 9th, there wasn't much interest on our part to chase.  However, being the junkies that we are, we decided to go out and find some trouble today.  The dryline was progged to be close to central Oklahoma and temperatures were to warm into the 70s.  Cap strength was an issue or should I say lack of it.  Additionally, storms developed in Texas early in the day.

We left Oklahoma City and headed south to Duncan, Oklahoma.  We sat just north of Duncan and watched storms develop.  Storms ended up clustering and remaining small.  While some tried to organize, nothing major happened and severe reports were isolated at best.  Storms in Texas disrupted our moisture supply and the cap was a little too weak.  We came home as the sun started to set.

Lessons Learned -

  • Watch storms to the south or anything that might disrupt moisture advection.

Encounters -

  • Engaged Storm:  Yes - several
    Tornado:  No
    Funnel:  No
  • Hail (larger than 0.75 inches):  No
    Wall Cloud:  No
  • Wind (above 57.4mph):  No
